Reports out of Cozumel have already indicated that marine equipment used for dredging of sand is being moved to the area off shore of Northern Cozumel in under water sand banks intended to provide the sand for beach replenishment. Furthermore, on Cozumel, there has been a growing grassroots movement fighting the removal of the aforementioned sand to be used as environmentally insensitive and potentially dangerous to the protection of the island by removing a natural barrier that has protected the Isla from storms for centuries, neither which to this date has yet to be proven factually but rather appears as speculation, possibly well founded, but speculation, nonetheless. The local group also claims that the area off shore is already in a zone preserved as environmentally protected under current Mexican law. It’s anticipated that the currently awaited environmental impact studies will address this issue in their findings.

The SEMARNET representative further indicated that the months of September and October are usually the worst of the time period for the hurricane season when currents and tidal flows cause the most erosion to the beach areas. He also indicated that the later part of the year would be the best period for the project, presumably post October as per the report.
