In a story breaking this morning from the respected regional newspaper, Diario de Yucatan, reports are indicating that the currently proposed beach recovery project slated for Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Cozumel “could” be delayed yet again due to concerns over implementation of the project during what is known as the tropical storm season or more commonly as hurricane season, as well as potential delays in the projects environmental impact study approvals.

Reports out of Cozumel have already indicated that marine equipment used for dredging of sand is being moved to the area off shore of Northern Cozumel in under water sand banks intended to provide the sand for beach replenishment. Furthermore, on Cozumel, there has been a growing grassroots movement fighting the removal of the aforementioned sand to be used as environmentally insensitive and potentially dangerous to the protection of the island by removing a natural barrier that has protected the Isla from storms for centuries, neither which to this date has yet to be proven factually but rather appears as speculation, possibly well founded, but speculation, nonetheless. The local group also claims that the area off shore is already in a zone preserved as environmentally protected under current Mexican law. It’s anticipated that the currently awaited environmental impact studies will address this issue in their findings.
The SEMARNET representative further indicated that the months of September and October are usually the worst of the time period for the hurricane season when currents and tidal flows cause the most erosion to the beach areas. He also indicated that the later part of the year would be the best period for the project, presumably post October as per the report.
In other related news, the City Government of Cancun approved the city’s end of project financing assuming an extensive debt over the coming years in what were thought to be detrimental financial terms with their lender, hoping to refinance the debt under better terms in the coming months with other major financial institutions. The City of Cancun government is discussing ways to increase further city income for the project’s payment including levying a major increase on property taxes of hotel zone related properties, primarily, the hotels on the beachfront themselves.
June 17th, 2009 at 9:13 am Can’t say I am surprised by this, kind of expected it actually. As much as I would love for this project to be over and done with, I did think it was foolish to start during “The Season”. I’d rather it be done well than done fast to be honest. Thanks for the report Dangers. Warm wishes to you as always.
June 17th, 2009 at 9:58 pm Thanks CC, and right back at you, I’m now in the delay now, play later camp for the beach restoration, too much time has elapsed to risk doing this now, IMHO. ;-)
June 18th, 2009 at 6:43 am That’s sad to hear. But CC was right, they started at a very bad time, and they should have thought about maintaining the beach awhile back so they don’t encounter problems now.
June 19th, 2009 at 11:34 am Oh and why tempt fate? They just better start this thing come December!

June 20th, 2009 at 8:38 pm Dave & Lauren, in agreement with you both, hopefully we’re all doing more than preaching to the choir, if not, let’s hope as always that hurricane season doesn’t roll in on the Yucatan this year. ;-)
