News You May Have Missed In & Around Quintana Roo

Dana Rishpy Update/ Arrest: As some of you may be aware, Dana Rishpy, a 25 year old, Israeli National, was the young woman that has disappeared from the town of Tulum on or about March 28, 2008. Rishpy hasn’t been seen since despite widespread efforts and searches by the Mexican Police at all levels, the Israeli Government and private investigators, including family members. On April 13, 2009, a female Mexican National, age 36 by the name of Pastrana Flores was arrested for questioning by the Mexican Police as a possible witness to the events surrounding Rishpy’s disappearance along with potential charges of drugs and theft from tourists in the region as per reports in Mexican Newspaper Diario de Quintana Roo. The report states that Flores is suspected of being a person of interest and an acquaintance of the Matthew Walshin, an American, who was in Tulum at the time of Rishpy’s disappearance, and possibly the last person to see her, but has since returned to the U.S. The warrant for Flores was issued by a Mexican Federal Judge and she was flown under guard to Mexico City. The Beach Bids are Due/ Cancun Beach Restoration: The next phase of beach restoration bids are due from private competitors on April 16, 2009 after the first bids were thrown out for “technical” violations. Mexican Girl, 15, Missing from Bel Air Hotel, Cancun: The local press is also reporting that during the recent Easter Break popular with National Tourists that a 15 year old girl from Coahuila has been reported by her family to have gone missing in Cancun while staying at the Bel Air Hotel in the Hotel Zone on April 10. It is not yet clear whether the girl has been abducted or has disappeared on her own as a runaway though police are investigating. No U.S. President Obama Visit for Cancun: Novedades is confirming today that President Obama of the U.S will not be making the rounds in Cancun as per previous reports in the local press. Obama will meet with Mexican President Calderon in Mexico City on April 16 & April 17.
Tropical Forest Fire Season: Reports are coming out from all over Quintana Roo that forest fires are breaking out in part because of human contribution and/ or the dry season in the tropical forests. Firefighters in the region are being overwhelmed with the increasing workload and failing equipment. The reports note that further expanding population occupation along with the climate are the primary causes in what has become an annual rite of spring and summer in Quintana Roo.
Coral Fossils Suggest That Sea Level Can Rise Rapidly, Study in Q.R.: NYTimes: Evidence from fossil coral reefs in Mexico underlines the potential for a sudden jump in sea levels because of global warming, scientists report in a new study. The study,
published Thursday in the journal Nature, suggests that a sudden rise
of 6.5 feet to 10 feet occurred within a span of 50 to 100 years about
121,000 years ago, at the end of the last warm interval between ice
ages.“The potential for sustained rapid ice loss and catastrophic
sea-level rise in the near future is confirmed by our discovery of
