Island Sounds, Calypso: Lord Kitchener’s, “Dr. Kitch”, I push it in, She pull it out…

Back in the day, when Caribbean travel was mainly set aside for the wealthy and the eccentric, the sounds of the islands drifted north with the sea breezes, in a tiny island in the southern most Caribbean, Trinidad, the sounds of “Calypso” music could be heard. And, from Trinidad, the grandmaster of calypso came forth, Aldwyn Roberts, AKA, Lord Kitchener, an islander who would move first to Jamaica and then to London, and back, where he helped established the calypso scene and music style for generations to come, not only in the Caribbean but worldwide. So while many people have bestowed the King of Calypso title on the talented, Jamaican born actor and musician, Harry Belafonte, a title that Belafonte humbly often declined, we bring you the real grandmaster of Calypso, the late Aldwyn Roberts, better known throughout the world and the West Indies as the Lord Kitchener.

The music video below features rare footage of “Kitch” performing Dr. Kitch, and is provided courtesy of YouTube by YouTube member Mack8710, and is our latest featured blog on the “Island Sounds”.

OMG Dangers!! Now you`ve really brought back memories for me! I was living in Manchester UK in the late 50`s and had the pleasure of knowing both Kitch and his wife. Spent many nights at the clubs listening to him. long before Ska, soca and reggae. Calypso was the best

Elmo~thanks for the “Kitch” story, I would have enjoyed meeting the grandmaster! As you’re probably aware of by now, I’m a fan of a lot of different types of music, and the root sounds of them particularly.**Imagining, a spliff, a drink, good company and Kitch’s music now, lol. ** ;-)
