Long before we got back into the blog business, in this case the Cancun blog business, we had been reading and perusing numerous Cancun materials, online and off, as we were constantly on the look out for reliable, up to date information along with new adventures to seek out. Whether it be the latest on the hotel and restaurant scene, the roads of home to the land of the Maya, the beach hideaway or that palapa hut with palms and good music serving cold cerveza under the Caribbean sun, we’ve always been on the search for the undone. Call it our lifetime “bucket list”, now going on 22 plus years of going boldly where no gringo has partied before, or at least attempting to do so. As it is, over the years, we’ve relied on an array of folks to help us along the way via, solid, useful information, tall tales, legendary stories of danger and the occasional kick in the arse.
As such, we hope, to help do for you, what often, we learned along the way, sometimes the hard way, by introducing you to the Cancun Casa Blog & Voices Roll, a group of folks, that carries the goods on Cancun, Mexico and a variety of other topics, most Mexico or Latin America related. Because, I guarantee, just when you think you’ve seen, heard, or done it all, the folks on our blog roll, if you give them a read here or there, we have no doubt, will awaken, enlighten and provide you with information you only thought you knew.
In no particular order and highly recommended:
- (Cafe)Cancun Today: from Jules Siegel and family, the folks that literally wrote the book on Cancun, “The Cancun Users Guide” is award winning writer Jules Siegel’s blog and guide that pack more punches per page, even if a bit dusty, than anything published today on visiting Cancun.
- A Canuck in Cancun: As the name suggests, this blog chronicles the ups and downs of a Canadian gringa in Cancun who dropped in for a vacation and never left, stayed to raise a family, and joined the locals, by living the every tourist’s dream of living in Cancun. But don’t think this Canadian Gal is all fluff without the stuff, she’s a Blogger of the Year Award winner and one of the best bloggers anywhere, Cancun, Mexico or otherwise.
- ¡Órale, pues!: Another of our blogging Ex Pats, GabachaYucateca though an infrequent blogger is an expert on the Maya Culture of today, a seasoned study of the human condition and carries that deft eye that all the good writers have that can be conveyed by observation, in this case, the state of Cancun and the Yucatan Peninsula.
- Cancun Travel: The Cancun Travel Blog is the official arm of Cancun Tourism and while well rooted in the commercial domain and the promotion of Cancun, the blog and associated site pages are a wealth of information on Cancun, Mexico for the visitor, if you’re planning a trip to Cancun for the first time or you’re just looking to get the lay of the land with updated information on things to do, this blog’s for you.
- Caribe Inversion : This is one of the finest Spanish language blogs on Cancun, devoted to the news worthy, Caribe Inversion covers the hottest stories in Cancun, and we’re not talking all sunshine. If you’ve gone beyond the glitz and glitter and want to get a grasp on the news that makes Cancun tick at the local level, you’ll find it here and more.
- Inside Mexico: Here we find the news of Mexico from the English language speaking perspective, more than a blog, Inside Mexico is a commercial based online source and monthly magazine for the English speaking living in Mexico, Anglo or otherwise.
- JiminCancun: If you’re looking for one of the folks that knows where the bodies are buried in Cancun, Jim is the guy, Jim’s been around Cancun for almost 25 years, and blogs on an array of topics, including his life in Cancun, Mexico. Jim covers the major news in Cancun also while giving the insider’s perspective to daily happenings in the tourism industry and behind the scenes looks at what’s on the Cancun horizon. This is a blogger that knows what makes Cancun roll.
- lydiacacho.net: If you really want to know, really want know, the Naked City, there is no one better to read than the award winning Cancun based, Mexican journalist, Lydia Cacho. This blog isn’t all bright lights and palm trees, this one’s for the serious reader, Spanish language based, and a pathway into the darkness of what lives under the tourist mecca called Cancun and elsewhere in Mexico.
- Mexico Bob: This South-Central Mexico based blogger details the view from Mexico that most foreigners don’t get to see or hear about while providing detailed research on events and stories around him. - MexiData: The folks at Mexidata bring you hard news via official news sources, journalists covering Mexico and opinion pieces featuring in depth articles on business and government in Mexico. This one’s typically for news hounds interested on the inter-workings of private industry and the public sector with a wide area of reporting concerning events of major issue in Mexico and internationally related.
- newsroom-l.net: Covering the news from a world perspective in an independent view, the tag line says it all, ” News and issues for journalists and other concerned imbeciles”… Ya gotta love it.
- Rivergirl: A former Colorado resident, now local gringa, writes about her life in Cancun, Mexico while working as a web and graphic designer, featuring stories on Cancun, volunteering for local causes, especially pets, and the day to day love/ hate relationship only an Ex Pat would know forging a relationship with a foreign land. A solid, well written and designed blog that’s a recommended visit for those interested in living in and/ or gathering information, for and about, Cancun.
- The Mex Files: A terrific blog devoted to the modern issues of Mexico as seen through the history of the country, well researched, written and totally non commercial, this blog’s another one of my favorites and features some serious writing that keeps the reader on the edge while conveying the story.
- TravelOjos: A legal editor brings his talent and travel experiences to the Mexican and Latin American blogging scene with detailed stories and news of the world from Mexico south. A beautifully laid out blog and sharp digital photography add to the readers experience along with the regular updates available.
- Truth About Mexico: When the International news took Mexico by storm regarding warring drug cartels, border violence and swine flu, this blog, backed by Ex Pats across Mexico and elsewhere stepped up to the keys to write back and get the truth out. If you can handle the truth beyond the typical syndicated talking heads style stuff being fed to the masses regarding Mexico, this is the place to find it.
- Yucatan Living: An online E-Zine about living, working and playing in the Yucatan State of Mexico, this group effort from several Ex Pat writers provides a colorful cross section of life in the Yucatan and several in depth looks at the Mexican condition while featuring the tales of everyday life. Yucatan Living gives one the taste and feel of the Yucatan without leaving your PC, though we highly recommend doing so.
So, there it is, a list of current favorites, some old, some new, but all worth a visit, there’s many more out there, far to many to list but if you’re looking for people to help guide you on that next Mexican adventure, these are some of the folks that can, and will, get you there and back.
Because you’ll never know who you’ll be sharing a cold drink with when you’re off the beaten track.
Put it on the Coconut Telegraph in twenty five words or less…
